iOS 6 turn-by-turn navigation not coming to pre A5 processor devices

On Monday Apple showed us iOS 6 at their yearly World Wide Developer conference. One of the biggest changes to the mobile operating system was Apple’s in house Maps application. Apple demoed the new Maps app and two of its newest features, 3D Flyover and turn-by-turn voice guided navigation.

Although iOS6 will be coming to the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and the original iPad, these device will not get turn-by-turn and 3D Flyover features. Only device running Apples’ latest A5 processor will get those two features so if you’ve got a iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or iPad 3 your all set to go.

Apple also announced FaceTime over a mobile connection is coming in iOS 6 but this feature will be left out for people owning an iPhone 4.

Apple using TomTom data for iOS 6 Maps

With Apples latest iOS software, iOS 6, Apple have decided to stop using Google Maps for the data for their Maps application and team up with TomTom.

This means TomTom will be providing all the mapping and location data for Maps in iOS 6 and is the backbone for the turn-by-turn navigation feature.

This isn’t the only partnership TomTom has made, earlier in the year they announced that their service TomTom HD Traffic will be powering BlackBerry Traffic, Research In Motion’s answer to Google Maps on Android and Maps on iOS.
